What's New at IAFF 3631

For 20 years, firefighter and paramedic Dan Brown has battled structure blazes and wildlife fires, revived people from cardiac arrests and solved mechanical problems on the fire engines. He’s been on duty for all major wildlife fires in Orange County and has a work ethic that drives him to launch service projects beyond the call of duty.

The Orange County Fire Authority honored Brown with the Career Firefighter of the Year award during its seventh annual Best and Bravest ceremony on Jan. 29. Brown was selected out of nine battalions and 71 fire stations.

“I enjoy helping people and being part of the community,” Brown said. He’s assigned to Station 39 in Laguna Niguel, which also serves part of Aliso Viejo and Laguna Hills.

Brown was one of eight award recipients from the Orange County Fire Authority, nominated by his peers and chosen by a 10-member peer committee.

Other winners were Reserve Firefighter of the Year Bruce Newell of Modjeska Canyon, Manager of the Year Todd Muilenburg of Lake Forest and Staff Employee of the Year Jason Caya of Newport Beach.

Fire Capt. and paramedic Paul Holaday of Lake Forest received the Lifesaving Medal for saving a 3-year-old boy from drowning.

The Medal of Merit went to Michele Hernandez of Tustin for generating more than $10 million in revenue for the agency.

The Unit Citation was presented to firefighters from engines 70 and 72 who helped save four people from a burning home.

The Unsung Hero award was given to the OCFA Benevolent Association, a nonprofit supporting firefighters in need.

Brown, 42, started as a volunteer firefighter in Rainbow in San Diego, where he was honored as the Volunteer Firefighter of the Year before starting his career in Fallbrook and then transferring to Orange County nearly 15 years ago.

Community service is nothing new for the Brown family. Brown’s two sons are serving in the Army, his sister works as a firefighter in Irvine, and his wife works in the emergency room at Palomar Medical Center. Brown also has volunteered for his five children’s sports leagues.

“I think it’s a noble thing to do, the right thing to do,” Brown said.

Fire Capt. Jim Day from Station 39 said Brown is a “jack of all trades and a super hard worker.”

“He can fix anything because he’s an excellent mechanic and he can build anything because he is an expert welder,” Day said. “That comes in very handy when you are out in a brush fire and need to fix an engine.”

Capt. Rob Capobianco, who worked with Brown at Station 22 in Laguna Hills and chose Station 39 in order to work with Brown, agreed.

“He’s the type of engineer you can lean on and if we’re in a bind, he’s someone you can rely on,” Capobianco said. “He is the go-to guy who thinks outside the box.”

Brown, who has also worked at Station 59 in San Clemente and Station 57 in Aliso Viejo, just embarked on his newest challenge as an assistant fire training officer at the Fire Authority’s Irvine headquarters. Through coordinating engineering academies and serving on both the equipment and apparatus committees, Brown makes sure to keep other firefighters and their equipment safe. During large incidents, he’s on scene to ensure the safety of the firefighters.

“All of the education is to make sure they are doing the job well and safe,” he said. “The end goal is to go home safely to family and friends. My job is to make sure they do that,” Brown said.
